Understanding how we analyze food products to determine their FODMAP content

Algorithm Version 1.3

Released July 1, 2025

Our algorithm uses a scientific, data-driven approach to calculate FODMAP content by analyzing ingredient composition and leveraging laboratory testing data from trusted research institutions.

1

Extract Masses

Get ingredient quantities from FDA/USDA databases

2

Match Lab Data

Find FODMAP values from tested foods

3

Calculate Total

Scale and sum FODMAPs per serving

Detailed Methodology

1. Extract Ingredient Masses

We determine the mass of each ingredient per serving using nutritional data from FDA, USDA, and international regulatory databases. This gives us precise measurements of how much of each ingredient is present in a standard serving.

2. Match to Lab-Tested Foods

Each ingredient is matched to foods that have been laboratory tested for FODMAP content by research institutions. We maintain a comprehensive database of tested foods with verified FODMAP measurements.

3. Scale and Calculate Total FODMAPs

Using the known mass of each ingredient and its FODMAP content from lab data, we scale the values proportionally and sum them to determine the total FODMAP content per serving. This is then compared against established low FODMAP thresholds.
